OpenAI Unveils GPT-4o ‘Omni’ Model Now Powering ChatGPT

OpenAI has introduced its latest generative AI model, GPT-4o, on Monday. The “o” in GPT-4o stands for “omni,” highlighting the model's enhanced capability to process text, speech, and video seamlessly. Over the next few weeks, GPT-4o will be integrated gradually into OpenAI’s various developer and consumer-facing products.

Capability Enhancement

GPT-4o reasons across voice, text, and vision. This is a critical advancement as it represents the future of human-machine interaction.

Mira Murati, CTO at OpenAI

Previously, OpenAI’s top model, GPT-4 Turbo, could process and analyze text and images, completing tasks like extracting text from images or describing visual content. However, GPT-4o goes a step further by adding speech processing, which facilitates more dynamic and versatile uses. In particular, GPT-4o significantly enhances the functionality of OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT.

GPT-4o also boosts ChatGPT’s visual comprehension abilities. With this new model, ChatGPT can quickly respond to queries about image content, such as identifying software codes on a desktop screenshot or recognizing the brand of clothing in a photo. Moreover, GPT-4o enhances multilingual performance, boasting superior functionality in approximately 50 languages.

Future Prospects

We recognize that these models are becoming more complex, but we strive to make the interaction experience simpler, more intuitive, and user-friendly. We have mainly been focusing on improving the intelligence of these models over the past years, but now we are making a significant leap in ease of use.

Mira Murati, CTO at OpenAI

From today, GPT-4o is available in the free tier of ChatGPT, as well as for subscribers of OpenAI’s premium ChatGPT Plus and Team plans, offering '5x higher' message limits. Users will notice that ChatGPT automatically switches to the older GPT-3.5 model upon reaching the rate limit. Moreover, the GPT Store, OpenAI’s repository for third-party chatbots built on its AI models, is now accessible to ChatGPT’s free tier users.
